Yumthang Valley: Known as the Valley of Flowers, Yumthang Valley is one of the most famous attractions near Lachung, situated about 25 km away. It’s home to a vast array of alpine flowers, especially rhododendrons, which bloom in spring (April-May). The valley also offers stunning views of snow-clad peaks and is ideal for nature lovers and trekkers.
Zero Point (Yumesamdong): Located about 50 km from Lachung, Zero Point is the last accessible civilian point near the Indo-China border. At an altitude of around 15,300 feet, it offers panoramic views of snow-covered mountains and a surreal, snow-filled landscape, especially during winter. The area is known for its high-altitude beauty and snow-covered valleys.
Lachung Monastery: Built in 1880, Lachung Monastery, also known as Lachen Gompa, is a spiritual center for the local Buddhist community. It’s situated on a hilltop offering a peaceful ambiance and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The monastery plays a central role in local festivals and cultural events.
Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary: This sanctuary is located on the way to Yumthang Valley and is famous for its wide variety of rhododendrons. During spring, the sanctuary turns into a colorful paradise as the flowers bloom, creating a vivid landscape. It is also a haven for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.
Hot Springs near Yumthang Valley: Not far from Yumthang, you’ll find hot springs, which are believed to have therapeutic properties. Nestled amidst beautiful surroundings, the natural hot water pools are an excellent spot to relax and rejuvenate, especially in cold weather.
Seven Sisters Waterfall: On the way from Lachung to Gangtok, this waterfall is a beautiful sight, especially during the monsoon season. The water cascades down in seven stages, hence the name “Seven Sisters.” It’s a perfect stop for photography and a peaceful retreat amidst nature.
Chopta Valley: Situated a little beyond Lachung, Chopta Valley is another beautiful, less-explored destination known for its scenic landscape of snow-capped mountains, meadows, and rivers. It’s ideal for a peaceful nature walk or a more adventurous trek.
Bhima Nala Waterfall: Also known as Amitabh Bachchan Falls due to its towering height, Bhima Nala Waterfall is located on the way to Yumthang Valley. The fall gushes down from a great height, creating a spectacular sight, especially during the monsoon season.
Phuni Ski Resort: Located near Lachung, Phuni is a popular skiing destination in North Sikkim. During the winter months (December-February), the area is covered with snow, making it ideal for skiing and snowboarding activities.
Mount Katao: Though not as famous as other spots, Mount Katao offers a majestic view of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. It’s around 30 km from Lachung and requires special permission to visit since it’s close to the army base. It’s a great spot for adventure sports like skiing and snowboarding during winter.
