Local Sightseeings / Things To Do In Puri:

1) Jagannath Temple: The most famous site in Puri. Jagannath Temple was built in the twelfth century by the Ganga Dynasty. Rath Yatra is the most sacred festival in Puri. Lord Jagannath is the main deity of the temple along with Lord Balabhadra & Subhadra. Snan Yatra, Chandan Yatra, Dol Yatra, Makar Sankranti are the festivals celebrted in the temple when a large number of pilgrims from all over India visit the temple. The temple remains open from 5:00 am to 12:00 in the midnight. Mangal Arati is the first ritual of the day which takes place at 5:00 am when the temple opens. Beshalagi, the deities are made to change their dresses. At 8:00 they are adorned with gold & beautiful dresses. This is also known as "Bhitar Katha". Sakala Dhupa is performed at 10:00 am where bhog is offered to the gods. Madhyanha Dhupa is performed between 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Sandhya Dhupa takes place between 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, poojas are performed again & bhog is prepared. Mailam & Chandan Lagi are performed in the evening when the deities are covered with sandal paste. One can witness this after paying a fee in the temple trust. Finally Badashringara Bhoga is the last bhog of the day. Also pooja is performed.

2) Puri Beach: This is a fine coastline of Bay Of Bengal with the sun gleaming on the water. This place is perfect for tourists looking for some solitude. The beach is renowned for sand sculptures made internationally known artist Sudarshan Patnaik. The sculptures are usually inspired by the art covering the temples or other mythological creatures. The stretch of the Chakratirth side is more tranquil & pleasant for a long walk along the beach.

3) Gundicha Temple: Is one of the temples closely related to the festivity of Rath Yatra. This is a holy place where God resides for seven days during the festival. This temple is regrded as the place of Lord Jagannath's Aunt.

3) Sakshi Gopal: Sakshi Gopal (The Witnessing Lord) is a place 20km away from Puri where a life-sized image of little Lord Krishna is placed. This was to commemorate the incident when Lord Krishna came to this place as a witness to clear out dispute of two brahmans.

4) Chilika Lake: The largest brackish water lake in Asia is situated just a few kilometres away from Puri & is a place worth visiting. It is affectionately called the 'Honeymooner's Paradise' & 'Breakfast Island'. The simmering blue water makes it an excellent site to have a break from the monotonous daily life routine.

5) Kakatpur: Is famous for the shrine of Goddess Mangala situated on the bank of river Prachi. The temple dates back to 15th century AD 7 the deity belongs to the 9th Century AD. Goddess Mangala sits in Lalitasana on a double lotus pedestal.

6) Alarnath Temple: Temple is associated with the visit of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to Odisha. Chaitanya Prabhu during his stay in Puri used to see Lord Jagannath daily. It is at distance of 22km from Puri in Brahmagiri. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu this is one of thefamous temples of Vishnu in Odisha.There is a stone slab in front of the deity which bears impressions of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's body.

7) Kuruma:  Kuruma is famous for the excavated site of Buddha Vihar. It is small village known as the Jama-Dharma situated at a distance of 8km from Konark. The village has come to prominance due to its discovery of archaelogical remains like the image of Lord Buddha seated in Bhumi Sparsa Mudra along with the image of Heruka (a buddhist deity). There is a brick wall measuring 17 metres.

8) Chaurasi: Is a small village famous for ancient temple of Varahi. Varahi is the mother goddess with the face of a boar. It is believed that she holds a fish in one hand & a cup in the other. She is worshiped according to tantric rites. The existing temple of Laxminarayan & Nilamadhab are additional attractions of the place. Close to the village, Amareswar is also famous for the shrine of Amareswar.

9) Raghurajpur: The village is famous for Gotipura Dance. Near to Raghurajpur is another better-known destination Danda Sahi. A small village of about 50 households, is one on the side of the historical road through which Sri Chaitanya had travelled to Puri. The Raghurajpur village idyllic setting on the southern bank of river Bhargavi, sirrounded by coconut, palm, mango, jackfruit & other tropical trees. Village is famous for community of artisans who produce different handicrafts like Patta Paintings, Palm Leaf Engravings, Stone Carvings, Masks, Wood Carvings, Tusser Paintings etc.

10) Pipili: Is famous for Applique works which are traditional craft of the local people. They prepare Chandua (colourful arts on clothes), Umbrella, Cloth Bags, Purses, Wall Hangings, Carpets, Garments & other applique works which have a good maket in India & abroad. During the Rath Yatra, the chariots are decorated with clothes made by the people of Pipili.
