Lataguri – Gateway to Gorumara National Park

Lataguri is a charming little town located right at the edge of Gorumara National Park, one of the most popular wildlife destinations in the Eastern Himalayan region of West Bengal. Situated in the Jalpaiguri district, the town is surrounded by lush tea gardens, serene rivers, dense forests, and small forest villages — creating a perfect backdrop for nature and wildlife lovers.

From Lataguri, you can easily get permits for jungle safaris in Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary by presenting a valid government-issued ID. With well-connected roads and ample facilities, the town is a great place to visit with family — including children and senior citizens.

Whether it’s spotting the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, leopards, bison, deer, or the giant squirrel during safari rides, or simply relaxing amidst nature — Lataguri promises a memorable experience. How to reach Lataguri

By Air: The nearest airport to Lataguri is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), around 70 km away. Bagdogra is well-connected to major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. From the airport, you can easily book a cab to reach Lataguri comfortably.

By Train: The closest railway stations are Malbazar and New Mal Junction, both well-connected to major Indian cities. Malbazar is just 10 km away, while New Mal Junction is slightly farther but offers more train options. Cabs are easily available from both stations to reach Lataguri.

By Road: Lataguri is accessible via National Highway 27, which links several towns in the region. The drive is smooth and scenic, making it a pleasant option for those who enjoy road trips.

Gorumara National Park

The highlight of Lataguri, this famous national park is known for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. It’s a major wildlife hub in the Eastern Himalayan foothills and offers thrilling jungle safari experiences.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

Located very close to Gorumara, this sanctuary is renowned for sightings of Asiatic elephants. It is nourished by the waters of Teesta, Neora, and Murti rivers, making it rich in flora and fauna.

Murti River

Murti is a breathtakingly beautiful river spot near Lataguri. The tranquil riverbank draws many visitors looking to soak in the peaceful natural surroundings of Dooars.

Gorumara offers two exciting types of forest safaris:

  1. Watch Tower Based Safari
    • The Gypsy takes you to specific watch towers where salt pits attract animals like elephants, rhinos, and deer.
    • Ideal for observing wildlife from a fixed, elevated point.
  2. Core Jungle Safari
    • A thrilling 15–16 km drive into the core jungle area.
    • You are not allowed to get off the vehicle, ensuring safety and minimal disturbance to wildlife.
