Lachung

Lachung is one of the most well-known tourist destinations located in the Mangan district (North Sikkim) of Sikkim state and very nearer to the India-Tibet border. Lachung is situated at the confluence of Lachen chu and Lachung chu and this conjugate flow is popular as the famous Teesta River of North Bengal and Sikkim. The most two popular spots you can visit from Lachung are – i) Yumthang Valley and ii) Zero Point.

If you are making a plan to go to North Sikkim including Lachung, you must have to stay in Gangtok for a minimum of one night and get a permit with a proper ID card and photo from there to go to Lachung. Being situated at an elevation of about 9600 ft, Lachung is a bit tricky for those who are not physically well enough. There is no age barrier to go Lachung. If anyone is physically fit, he/she can go.

 

How to reach Lachung

By Air: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to go to Lachung, but you can’t go directly to Lachung from Bagdogra since they need to get a permit from Gangtok to go to North Sikkim. The distance from Bagdogra to Gangtok is about 123 kilometres and From Gangtok to Lachen, it is another 110 kilometres.

By Train: Tenzing Norgey Bus stand is the nearest bus stand. It connects with all neighbouring cities and states. The total distance from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand to Lachung is 183.4 kilometres. 

By Road: NJP or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is near most railway stations from Lachung as well as Gangtok. From NJP to Gangtok it is about 118 kilometres and from Gangtok, to Lachung it is a further 110 kilometres.

 

Lachung Tourist Spots:

Yumthang Valley: Known as the Valley of Flowers, Yumthang Valley is one of the most famous attractions near Lachung, situated about 25 km away. 

Zero Point (Yumesamdong): Located about 50 km from Lachung, Zero Point is the last accessible civilian point near the Indo-China border. At an altitude of around 15,300 feet, it offers panoramic views of snow-covered mountains and a surreal, snow-filled landscape, especially during winter. 

Lachung Monastery: Built in 1880, Lachung Monastery, also known as Lachen Gompa, is a spiritual center for the local Buddhist community. It’s situated on a hilltop offering a peaceful ambiance and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. 

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary: This sanctuary is located on the way to Yumthang Valley and is famous for its wide variety of rhododendrons. 

Hot Springs near Yumthang Valley: Not far from Yumthang, you’ll find hot springs, which are believed to have therapeutic properties.

Seven Sisters Waterfall: On the way from Lachung to Gangtok, this waterfall is a beautiful sight, especially during the monsoon season. The water cascades down in seven stages, hence the name “Seven Sisters.”

Chopta Valley: Situated a little beyond Lachung, Chopta Valley is another beautiful, less-explored destination known for its scenic landscape of snow-capped mountains, meadows, and rivers. 

Bhima Nala Waterfall: Also known as Amitabh Bachchan Falls due to its towering height, Bhima Nala Waterfall is located on the way to Yumthang Valley. 

Phuni Ski Resort: Located near Lachung, Phuni is a popular skiing destination in North Sikkim. During the winter months (December-February), the area is covered with snow, making it ideal for skiing and snowboarding activities.

Mount Katao: Though not as famous as other spots, Mount Katao offers a majestic view of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. It’s around 30 km from Lachung and requires special permission to visit since it’s close to the army base.
