Chilapata Forest, nestled between the renowned Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve in the Dooars region of Alipurduar district, West Bengal, is one of the most enchanting and lesser-explored forests in Eastern India. Rich in biodiversity, this dense forest is home to majestic wildlife including the endangered one-horned rhinoceros, Asiatic elephants, leopards, barking deer, gaurs (Indian bison), sambars, wild boars, and occasionally, the elusive cheetah.
A key highlight of Chilapata is the ‘Nalraja Garh’, an ancient fort believed to have been constructed during the Gupta dynasty. Although now in ruins, its historical and archaeological significance adds a unique cultural layer to the forest experience.
Chilapata offers thrilling guided jeep safaris through its dense forests. The most popular watchtower is CC Line, an excellent spot to witness the one-horned rhinoceros in its natural habitat. Another must-visit area during the safari is Mendabari, known for frequent sightings of wild animals and lush greenery.
For those staying in Jaldapara or Madarihat, a one-day excursion to Chilapata is easily possible and rewarding. However, to soak in the silence and serenity of the forest, staying overnight inside Chilapata is an experience you won’t forget.
By Air The nearest airport to Chilapata is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), which is approximately 160 kilometers away. Bagdogra is well-connected to major cities in India, including Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai. Upon landing at Bagdogra, travelers can hire a taxi or take a pre-booked cab to reach Chilapata. The drive from the airport takes about 4-5 hours, offering picturesque views of the landscape.
By Train The nearest railway station to Chilapata is Alipurduar Junction, located about 28 kilometers away. Alipurduar Junction is well-connected to various cities across India, including Kolkata, Guwahati, and Siliguri. From the station, you can hire a taxi or utilize local transportation to reach Chilapata. The journey from Alipurduar Junction to Chilapata typically takes around 40-60 minutes by road. You can also reach Hasimara Railway station however Alipurduar is more well connected.
By Road reaching Chilapata by road is a scenic option. It is accessible through National Highway 27, which connects Siliguri to Alipurduar. The road trip from Siliguri to Chilapata takes about 4-5 hours. For a more local flavor, consider driving from Kolkata, which would take approximately 12-14 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

The Gypsy safari is the most popular way to explore Chilapata Forest. It is conducted in open jeeps, offering a raw and thrilling ride through the dense sal forests and wilderness trails.
● Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
● Timings: Morning & Afternoon slots (subject to forest department regulations)
● Starting Point: The safari generally starts from Kodalbasti Forest Check Post, which is the main entry gate to Chilapata Forest.
● Booking Process: You can book safaris through the Chilapata Eco-tourism office or authorized forest counters near Kodalbasti. Advance booking is recommended during peak season.
Wildlife Sightings: Indian bison (gaur), wild elephants, barking deer, leopards (if lucky), and various species of birds and butterflies. The ancient Nalraja Garh (Nal King’s Fort) is also a major attraction along the route.
For a more immersive forest experience, Elephant Safari is offered in some parts of the Chilapata region (depending on forest department availability).
● Experience: You’ll be seated on the back of a trained elephant, moving slowly and quietly through dense foliage, allowing close encounters with nature and wildlife.
● Starting Point: Elephant rides typically begin near Kodalbasti Forest Range Office, the same place where Gypsy safaris start.
● Timings & Slots: Usually held in the morning only. It’s advisable to check availability in advance as seats are limited and subject to forest regulations and elephant availability.
● ID Proof: Carry valid government-issued ID (Aadhar, Voter ID, etc.) for safari booking.
● Camera Fees: May be applicable depending on your equipment.
● Best Season: November to April – pleasant weather and better chances of wildlife sightings.
● Closed Period: Safari is generally closed during monsoon (mid-June to mid-September) as per forest department rules.
